An Astrophysicist’s Favorite Books on Cosmology

This reading list takes you to the stars

To me cosmology was never really about the equations. It’s the oldest thing we do, this itch to look up and try to explain the whole business, and it shows up in myth and in a whole constellation of confident-but-wrong ideas and soulful attempts to connect ourselves to some grander scale of meaning. So a few of these are “real” cosmology books. The rest, real in their own way. You’ll see.

Your Place in the Universe: Understanding Our Big, Messy Existence by Paul M. Sutter (2018)

Yes, I wrote this one, so we’ll get it out of the way first. I stuck it in here because it’s about as close as I’ve gotten to putting down what the universe actually feels like to me when I don’t have to be professional about it. The whole thing is basically trying to make you feel very small and weirdly okay about that at the same time. Anyway, it’s mine, moving on.

Lonely Hearts of the Cosmos: The Story of the Scientific Quest for the Secret of the Universe by Dennis Overbye (1991)

I never understand why more people don’t read this. It’s about the astronomers who spent decades of their actual lives arguing with each other over how big and old the universe is. Ego and grudges large enough to fill the cosmos. The tidy version we get in school came out of that knife fight.

The Book of Nothing: Vacuums, Voids, and the Latest Ideas About the Origins of the Universe by John D. Barrow (2000)

A whole book about nothing, everything from the number zero up to the enormous empty gaps that make up most of the universe by volume. Personal one for me. I’ve spent years mapping the giant voids between galaxies, so I come at emptiness with a bias.

The Magic Furnace: The Search for the Origin of Atoms by Marcus Chown (1999)

Where did the atoms in your body come from? They got cooked inside stars that were already dead and gone billions of years before the sun showed up. Chown writes it like a whodunit. Closest thing physics has to real alchemy, except it actually worked.

Primal Myths: Creation Myths Around the World by Barbara C. Sproul (1979)

Every culture on Earth dreamed up a creation story before anybody owned a telescope. This book isn’t exactly all of them, but close. I read it to remind myself that even our most advanced cosmological theories are variations on a theme.

Cosmigraphics: Picturing Space Through Time by Michael Benson (2014)

All the ways we’ve ever tried to draw the universe, from monks who were flat-out guessing to our own maps, which, fine, are also partly guessing. The thing that gets me is that every single picture in it looked authoritative in its day. Whatever we’ve got taped to the wall right now is going to look adorable eventually (I hope).

Cosmicomics by Italo Calvino (1965)

Short stories narrated by an ancient being who was hanging around before the universe properly got going and is a little grumpy about how it all turned out. I’ve never found anything else that makes deep time feel tender instead of terrifying.

On the Nature of Things by Lucretius (c. 50 B.C.)

Some Roman guy 2,000 years ago wrote a long poem claiming the entire universe is just atoms slipping through the void and banging into each other. And he was more or less correct, with no instruments and basically no data. It’s also in verse, which is sorely lacking in modern scientific texts.

A Responsibility to Awe by Rebecca Elson (2001)

Elson was an astronomer and poet who died at 39, leaving the world this one slender book of brilliant poems. In “Explaining Relativity,” she gently tells us that relativity is much more than a “stiff numbered grid”; it’s a “thing of pliancy, persuasion/Where space might cup itself around a planet/Like your palm around a stone.” Elson wrote many of these already knowing what was coming. So, they’re about the universe and about running out of time.

On Learned Ignorance by Nicholas of Cusa (1440)

A Catholic cardinal in the 1400s sat down and decided the universe has no center and no outer edge and that God is a sphere whose center is everywhere. A hard read, part theology and part… fever dream. Catchy title and solid thesis; knowing you don’t know turns out to be one of the older good ideas we’ve got.
